{"id":541040,"date":"2024-03-20T10:19:17","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T15:19:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/countthekicks.org\/?p=541040"},"modified":"2024-05-21T10:20:21","modified_gmt":"2024-05-21T15:20:21","slug":"maine-cdc-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/countthekicks.org\/2024\/03\/maine-cdc-launch\/","title":{"rendered":"Maine CDC Launches Count the Kicks Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/dhhs\/blog\/maine-cdc-and-partners-expand-stillbirth-prevention-program-2024-03-20\">Maine CDC<\/a>) is partnering with <em>Count the Kicks<\/em> to educate expectant parents about the importance of paying attention to their baby\u2019s movements in the third trimester of pregnancy. In Maine, one in every 175 pregnancies ends in stillbirth, with people from racial and ethnic minority groups being disproportionately affected.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stillbirth is commonly defined as the loss of a baby at 20 weeks or greater during pregnancy. It impacts more than 21,000 families in the U.S. every year, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/stillbirth\/data.html\">CDC<\/a>. Research shows that nearly 30% of stillbirths can be prevented when expectant parents are educated on how to monitor their baby\u2019s movements once a day starting at 28 weeks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Count the Kicks<\/em> is a program of <em>Healthy Birth Day, Inc.<\/em>, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention of stillbirth. The free <em>Count the Kicks <\/em>app is available in more than 20 languages in the Google Play and iOS app stores. To date it has more than 260,000 registered users in all 50 U.S. states, and more than 140 other countries. The app provides expectant parents a simple, non-invasive means of getting to know their baby\u2019s normal movement patterns. Parents who don\u2019t have smartphones or a strong internet connection can use downloadable <a href=\"http:\/\/countthekicks.org\/printable-charts\/\">counting charts<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evidence shows that a change in a baby\u2019s movements in the third trimester is an early red flag. After a few days of using the<em> Count the Kicks<\/em> app, expectant parents begin to see a pattern \u2013 a normal amount of time it takes their baby to get to 10 movements. If their baby\u2019s \u2018normal\u2019 changes during the third trimester, this could be a sign of potential problems and is an indication that the expectant parent should call their health care provider.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through partnership with the Maine CDC, maternal health providers, birthing hospitals, social service agencies, childbirth educators and other providers in Maine can order free <em>Count the Kicks <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/countthekicks.org\/order-materials\/store\/?state=ME\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">educational materials<\/a> to help them have a conversation about baby\u2019s movement patterns with expectant parents. These materials are available in Arabic, English, French, Haitian-Creole, Kinyarwanda, Lingala, Portuguese, Somali and Spanish.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/wonder.cdc.gov\/fetal.html\">U.S. CDC<\/a>, approximately 69 Maine babies are stillborn each year. <a href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/1471-0528.17426\">Research<\/a> shows that the <em>Count the Kicks<\/em> campaign helped lower the stillbirth rate in Iowa by more than 30% in the first 10 years of the prevention program at a time when America\u2019s overall stillbirth rate remained stagnant. Those results have led researchers to call for urgent action to address the stillbirth crisis in the U.S. and to study <em>Count the Kicks<\/em> on a national level.
